My Background

As an anesthesiologist I developed interests in pain medicine and

animal welfare.  30 years ago, we really didn’t know how to treat

pain in animals, and the field of animal welfare science was also

in its infancy. I developed science-based methods to assess pain

and distress in dogs, horses, cattle, mice and rabbits. I have taught

pain medicine to veterinary students and veterinarians for decades

and teaching is a passion of mine.

A dozen years ago, at Tufts Vet School, I created a pain service –

to help canine and feline patients with both acute (think post-surgical)

and chronic pain. I have adopted an integrative, whole-pet approach

to evaluation and treatment. I use Western and non-traditional medications and supplements, but also medical manipulation (= chiropractic adjustment), acupuncture, trigger point dry needling of frozen muscle groups, and lifestyle recommendations.

Along the way, I realized that many senior pets were actually having signs of cognitive dysfunction – dementia, and I have a blend of solutions to help those pets too.

Life 4s is my new venture to help dogs and cats with chronic pain, disability, and cognitive dysfunction.  I am particularly enthusiastic about offering medical manipulation – chiropractic adjustment - to canines with lameness, pain or stiffness, recovery from trauma or surgery, and for preventative care in couch potatoes and athletes.

Collaborative care is important to me – I am keen on working closely with the primary care vet, CCRP and other vet health professionals because that is how we get the best results for your pet.
